20th October 2011: Below are British Sign Language versions of NHS North West’s two timeline resources – the LGB&T (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) History Timeline and the BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) History Timeline.

The BSL videos are on Vimeo, which requires Internet Explorer 8 or higher to play, or they can be viewed using alternative free browsers such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

Rainbow Voices
This is a British Sign Language version of Rainbow Voices, a film about LGB&T staff in the NHS. In the film, LGB&T staff talk about their experiences of working in the NHS and how the culture of the health service has changed over the past two or three decades.

The film accompanies the LGB&T History Timeline exhibition launched earlier this year by NHS North West, to document the experiences of LGB&T people in relation to medicine and healthcare. It also highlights the contributions made by individuals, including groundbreaking developments in surgery and other areas of medicine: http://www.help.northwest.nhs.uk/lgbt_timeline/video.html

BME staff in the NHS
This is a British Sign Language version of a series of filmed interviews with BME staff, both clinical and non-clinical, which was published alongside the BME History Timeline to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the NHS.

12th September 2011: News from Disability Equality North West (DENW)

Following objections made by two women to proposals to reduce funding for adult social care, a Judicial Review has found in favour of Lancashire County Council (LCC).

The main issues the Judge considered were whether it was lawful for LCC to:

  • Significantly reduce its Adults and Communities budget.
  • Move its threshold for eligibility for adult community care services from ‘moderate’ to ‘substantial’.
  • Increase the charges which eligible service users must pay.

The Judge found in favour of Lancashire County Council. "Unprecedented economic circumstances" were a significant factor in his ruling. DENW have said that they will be organising a briefing meeting to discuss this outcome, which has disappointed many.
