Jillian Taylor
In these austere times when the number of people losing their jobs is growing on a daily basis your key word should be ‘perseverance.’ Breakthrough client Jillian is a prime example of dogged determination to succeed because she did not accept that living on benefits was an option. Jillian, who had spent 23 years working for Remploy, found herself without a job after taking redundancy. But Jillian wanted to get back into work as soon as she could and knew she had to be flexible to adapt to new challenges.
Within weeks of joining the Breakthrough service she gained employment as a chambermaid in one of Liverpool’s major hotels after three unsuccessful interviews for other vacancies. Unfortunately, after three months she found it difficult to cope with the pressure and time restraints with the work she was doing and gave in her notice.
On rejoining the Breakthrough service we reassessed her particular needs when searching for new opportunities. Once again Jillian was resolute in finding work and made regular visits to the Jobcentre, scanning newspapers and of course keeping in regular contact with Breakthrough. With her Employment Officer assisting with CVs, covering letters, job search activity and of course interview practice, within a short time she had achieved four interviews over a five week period resulting in paid work. Jillian now works as a Domestic Assistant in a local nursing home where she says the work suits her, at her pace. The staff are friendly, helpful and she is happy and settled in her new position. The picture above left shows Jillian at work in the laundry area.
Claire Lowe, Jillian’s supervisor, said she has fitted in well, is making good progress and that she will receive training to improve her domestic skills. Jillian, although at times she felt frustrated at the difficulty of getting a new job, never gave up and her single minded attitude helped her to succeed.
