On September 28th Paul Mittler Right to Control Design Group, Angie Farrell, User Led Development Co-ordinator with Right to Control Breakthrough UK and Sue Griffiths, Stockport Local Authority took part in the Aspirations day at Stockport College.
Angie commented “We spoke to several groups of students and were keen for them to understand the importance of Independent Living for Disabled People.”
Paul Mittler stressed the importance of disabled people having the same rights and opportunities as others. Accepting with rights comes responsibilities-disabled people aren`t looking for more money, just greater flexibility on what they can spend their benefits on.
During the Q&A sessions students were able to hear, personal examples on how support plans enabled disabled people to take a more active role in society It may take longer for some disabled people to get dressed in the morning, though they still have to be at work on time!
Angie believes it`s critical students realise disabled people have the same needs and aspirations as others and The Right to Control, programme enables Disabled People to purchase their own support under the Right to Control, Local Authorities, Job Centre Plus and other funding streams are working with disabled people making sure they are involved in each stage of the process.
The day proved a great success, with Paul & Angie invited back to the College in the near future.
