Women's events a great success

Two events aimed at disabled women and organisations working with them, have been a great success.

Democracy Disability & Devolution is a Breakthrough UK project funded by the Government Equalities Office – the Women’s Vote Centenary Project.

The events were held at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

Breaking Barriers to Disabled Women Taking Part was aimed at groups and organisations, wanting to work more closely with disabled women.

It was a chance to find out how to break down any barriers that may be stopping disabled women joining, or taking part in events.

Guest speakers included Women’s Equality Party spokesperson Athena Stevens.

Also, CEO of Manchester Women’s Aid Gail Heath, Councillor Eve Holt of Diva Manc and a pre-recorded message from Baroness Jane Campbell from the House of Lords.

The second event, Be Bold and Breakthrough, was aimed at individual disabled women, and we were delighted to welcome in women from across the country as well as Greater Manchester.

Workshops and discussions were held, and at the end of both events participants were asked to fill in a pledge card on something they would like to try and change for the future.

Lots of fantastic pledges were made. Following on from discussions at the events, Breakthrough is developing a legacy for the project, in the shape of a Passport to Politics and a Passport to Taking Part.

This will include guidance for disabled women on their rights and options, and for organisations on enabling disabled women’s full participation.
