Social Enterprise Research and Development Consultancy Brief
As part of our refreshed Strategic Growth Plan, Breakthrough UK are keen to understand the feasibility of investing in a new Social Enterprise which will part of the next stage of Breakthrough’s development.
We intend to develop a social enterprise that reflects the values and strategic objectives of Breakthrough UK and provides reinvestment opportunities to our organisation. We wish to develop a social enterprise that will provide high quality training and employment opportunities for disabled people and operate as ‘profitable’ social enterprise.
Breakthrough UK is a Manchester based disabled people’s organisation. We are led by disabled people, and we support other disabled people to work and live independently.
Breakthrough works to make positive changes at an individual, regional and national level. We provide disabled people with person centred support to develop their independence and gain access to training and employment. We advise employers, policy makers and other organisations to understand and remove barriers that disadvantage disabled people. Our aim is to bring about a society where disabled people can participate fully in all areas of life.

We are looking for a consultant, or two consultants, to conduct primary market research and early feasibility into the development of two possible social enterprise models which will benefit disabled people in Greater Manchester. A bakery or an employment support agency.
We are seeking someone with a strong understanding and working knowledge of Social Enterprise sector and models. A proven track record in producing personalised feasibility studies which have led to the successful development of sustainable Social Enterprises. Someone who is highly organised , resourceful and proactive , with skill to work accurately and meet strict deadlines. Someone with experience in the timely production of high quality and accessible reports, that are easily understood and can aid discussions and decision making with our Board.
This initial research will highlight both opportunities and risks of each proposal , this will enable the CEO and Board of Trustees to decide which enterprise model they wish to take forward to make an application to development funds (e.g. REACH) to enable the production of a detailed business plan and financial forecast.
The work needs to be complete by Monday 6th January 2020 in order to discuss the findings with the CEO and take a presentation to our Trustees on the evening of Monday 13th January 2020.
We have budgeted a maximum of £1,500 inc. per social enterprise model.

Brief Outline of key objectives of each proposed SE model
Bakery: To set up a bakery which will provide real work placement opportunities to equip disabled people with a wide range of skills and qualifications across the full business processes involved in the operational management , production & supply chain management of baked goods from an accessible premises in Manchester or outskirts of Manchester in another GM borough.
