PhD student and disability activist (35) requires personal assistant (PA)

Purpose of the role

To provide personal care and support with day-to-day activities in order to assist the individual to live independently.

Location

The role is based at the individual’s home in Manchester and is within walking distance of the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Duties include:

  • Supporting the individual with personal care and hygiene

  • Maintaining a clean and tidy home

  • Assisting with the organisation of the individual’s daily routine

  • Food preparation and food rotation

  • Supporting the individual to attend social activities and events

  • Assisting the individual to care for his pet cat

Skills required:

  • Punctual and reliable individual

  • Excellent organisation skills

  • Honest, open and respectful with good verbal communication skills

  • Basic cooking skills and understanding of nutrition

  • Positive and enthusiastic with ability to use initiative  

  • Willingness to undertake personal hygiene support with sensitivity and dignity

  • Flexibility and willingness to undertake other ad hoc activities when necessary

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree – desirable but not essential

  • Personal interest in cooking, nutrition and preparing healthy meals – desirable but not essential

Pay and working hours

  • There are three available positions; two at 15 hours per week and one at 5 hours per week plus cover for holidays, sick leave and days off.

  • Pay will be at a rate of £8.00 per hour

  • Free parking is available at the individual’s home.

Job description

  • Assisting with all forms of personal care including washing and showering, dressing, and assisting with personal hygiene, shaving, and taking medication.

  • Helping to maintain a clean and safe home environment. Tasks will include household chores such as cleaning, tidying and laundry.  

  • Helping the individual to organise his daily routine, pay bills, budget and respond to personal and professional correspondence.

  • Preparing food and supporting the individual to maintain a healthy diet. Tasks will include helping to purchase food and regularly carrying out food rotation in the home (ensuring all food is fresh and within date)

  • Occasional support to attend social events and other activities such as local political meetings, football matches and music gigs.

  • Assisting with the care of the individual’s cat, Narla, to ensure she is fed each day and her litter tray is cleaned and changed on a regular basis.
